Academic Staff Exceptional Performance Award 2007
The recipient of the 2007 WCER Academic Staff Exceptional Performance Award is Senior Editor Cathy Loeb. Here is an excerpt from WCER Director Adam Gamoran's center-wide e-mail announcing the award:
I am delighted to announce that this year's winner of the WCER Exceptional Performance Award is our senior editor, Cathy Loeb.
A Center-wide groundswell of opinion brought Cathy's nomination to me. No fewer than five letters of nomination were provided, each extolling Cathy's extraordinary efforts and exceptional contributions to the success of WCER's projects and the Center as a whole. The letters included statements such as the following:
"[Cathy's] skill in producing top-notch proposals that seek funding from other entities is unrivaled. Principal investigators depend on her to make their products clear, concise, and without error."
"As the editor of several of the proposals I have authored.[Cathy] has provided superior editing services and in many cases has made suggestions or raised questions that have materially improved the product, increasing its chances for funding..This is the type of contribution that is a quantum leap above the normal editorial support."
"Ms. Loeb does considerably more than a truly professional job of reviewing and editing a proposal - she also contributes in ways that are important for the conceptual coherence of a proposal and making the proposal logic visible and compelling."
"Cathy's nominal role at WCER is an editor. This she does very well - Cathy is a great writer and is able to see the meaning underlying the often murky text that I and my colleagues submit for potential funding.[her] real strength comes in her ability to develop professional relationships with her colleagues. The interactive process she develops is critical for idea development."
"In the process of responding to Cathy's editorial suggestions and through reading her reworking of my prose I have, quite literally, become a better writer."
I heartily endorse these sentiments.
Cathy Loeb joins 2006 winners Alissa Minor and Kitch Barnacle, and 2005 winner Sarah Mason.
